CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- United Way of East Central Iowa launched its 2010 annual campaign Monday, announcing a fundraising goal of $10,350,000.

"We have set our campaign goal for this year and are excited to announce that, with your help, we are working to raise $10,350,000 to support nonprofit organizations in our area," Gilda Boyer, an attorney and community volunteer said. "That's a slight increase over our attainment from last year and it's critical to continue our community building efforts."

Also introduced at the press conference was a new sweepstakes as part of this year's campaign called the "Step Up Challenge." Over $15,000 in prizes have been donated by local businesses and will be given away beginning in October. Contributors to the UWECI campaign are automatically entered to win.

United Way President & CEO Lois Buntz also outlined the organization's five-year community goals:

  • Increase the number of low-income children ready for school by 50%
  • Increase the number of low-income youth with 21st Century skills by 25%
  • Increase the number of financially stable households by 15%
  • Increase healthy choices by 10%
  • Increase by 25% the number of older adults who are able to meet their daily living needs

Donations to United Way of East Central Iowa stay in local communities to help people living in Benton, Cedar, Iowa, Jones, Linn and Washington Counties.
