Study finds no evidence thimerosal increases autism risk

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The latest research finds no proof a preservative used in some vaccines increases the risk of autism.

The use of thimerosal in childhood vaccines has long been controversial, because of claims that the mercury-based preservative may trigger autism in some children.

Scientists at the Centers for Disease Control looked at the immunization records of normal healthy children and compared them to kids with autism spectrum disorder.

They found the autistic children were not exposed to greater amounts of thimerosal than children without autism.
