Red Cross National Preparedness Month

KWWL (DUBUQUE)--  The Red Cross reports only 20% of households are ready for disasters, and they want to help during National Preparedness Month in August.

Experts recommend that each family build an emergency preparedness kit, make an emergency plan, and be informed about what resources are available in the event of a disaster. They suggest an emergency kit should include enough supplies for three days in case you need to evacuate. In addition to food and water, your kit should include a flashlight, a radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, and a 7-day supply of medications.

On September 25, 2010, the Red Cross in Dubuque will be hosting Safety Day at Lowe's from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to help you make your own safety kit. They will also demonstrate safety preparedness and first aid to help you be ready in case of emergency.

There will be a number of other events throughout the month to help you know what to do in case of disaster. For more information about local activities during National Preparedness Month, you can go to or contact the American Red Cross of the Tri-States at 563-583-6451.
