Police bust three in string of car break-ins

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Surveillance video helped nabbed three people linked to more than 20 car break-ins in southwest Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids police say in the last month, 20 break-ins had been reported in the area of Westdale Mall.

On Wednesday, police say 25-year-old Rudy Alarcon-Maldonado was caught breaking into a car at St. Luke's Insta Care on Edgewood Road Southwest.

That same day, police say they located the vehicle used in the car thefts and arrested the driver, Gonzalo Pineda-Meija, for being in the country illegally.

A search warrant at an apartment in the 4000 block of 22nd Avenue Southwest found items linked to the car break-ins.

The person living there, Abeninda Garcia-Rivera, was taken into custody, and was also found to be in the country illegally.
