Memory Walk just over a week away in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Alzheimer's Association's annual Memory Walk is just over a week away.  Memory Walk is an event held across the nation.

The local chapter holds walks in Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Coralville, and West Union.

More than raising money, it's about awareness.  The money that is brought in goes to care, support, advocacy and research programs.

Organizers say events like this are important for getting people to talk about the disease.

"It's kind of one of those silent diseases that no one talks about when they are diagnosed with it, but we want people to know that we're here for them. That they are not alone and there are resources available to them," Alzheimer's Association Outreach Coordinator Ashley Shaw said.

Memory walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 18th at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo.  It starts at 9:00 a.m.

Last year, it raised $240,000 locally and organizers are hoping to do even better.
