New million dollar campground opens soon

FAYETTE (KWWL) -- Lakeview Campground at Volga River State Recreation Area in Fayette is empty now but not for long.

The new campground is set to open September 18th.

"We have 42 campsites, 34 are full hook up: water, electric and sewer. The price on those is $19 a night. We have seven campsites that just offer electricity and water and that's $16 a night. We have one organized youth group site for Boy Scouts, church groups and that's $15 a night," said Park Manager Tom Halverson.

Even though the campsites open soon, you can't make a reservation until next year.

"I think we'll be full most of the summer next year. I think it will be really popular," said Halverson.

Halverson said the project cost nearly $1.2 million. He said the Department of Natural Resources bought the land in the 70s, but this is the first big construction project.

Halverson said the DNR wouldn't have been able to complete the project without special funding secured through several Iowa senators and representatives. About $750,000 came from part of the Rebuild Iowa Infrastructure Fund.

"Local people have been waiting a long time to have a fully modern facility here at the recreation area, and we owe our thanks to local legislators that secured funds to make this happen," said Halverson.

Just a few finishing touches are being made before the grand opening. That opening will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 18th.

That night will also be the first night for campers. Those spots will go on a first-come-first serve basis.

Halverson says the park is still looking for a campsite host. That person camps for free, but must help out with some duties at the campground.
