CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Lincoln Elementary School is receiving honors as one of the top schools in the nation.

Thursday morning, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced the Cedar Falls school is a National Blue Ribbon School, one of just 304 in the country.

The award is given to public and private schools whose students show high achievement levels, or have made great progress on test scores and student learning.  The Department of Education began awarding schools where students achieve and maintain high standards in 1982.

This year, Lincoln Elementary is one of five Iowa schools getting recognition for their continuing success.  Bedford Elementary School, Kee High School in Lansing, McKinley Elementary School in Muscatine, and West Elementary School in Knoxville are the other recipients.

The awards will be handed out in Washington D.C. at a two-day ceremony, November 15-16.
