UPDATE: Cedar Rapids apartment fire displaces one resident

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says a fire at an apartment complex Thursday morning has displaced one resident.

Greg Buelow, spokesman for the fire department, says the fire broke out in apartment #8 of the 18-unit complex at 640 16th Avenue SW just after 10:00 Thursday morning.

Buelow says the fire started above the refrigerator and stove.

Donnie Jennings, 54, the man who lives in the apartment, was not home at the time and will be helped by the American Red Cross because he will not be able to return to his apartment.

Buelow adds that the smoke detector inside the apartment wasn't working, but other smoke detectors in the building alerted residents.

18 people were evacuated from the building, two were evaluated for possible injuries, but no one was taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
