Kernels cut down LumberKings as playoffs begin

CLINTON (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids Kernels won the first game of their three game play-off series with the Clinton LumberKings on Wednesday night at Alliant Energy Field in Clinton.

Jose Jimenez led the Kernels in the 3-2 victory going 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBI's.

Pitcher Ariel Pena allowed only one hit over 5.1 innings and Johnny Hellweg recorded the save.

Brandon Maurer took the loss for the LumberKings, giving up two runs on two hits over an inning of relief work.

Game 2 is Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field in Cedar Rapids.  Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
