UNI, Kirkwood see enrollment increases

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Area colleges and universities are seeing a jump in enrollment this fall.

For the fourth consecutive year, University of Northern Iowa officials report an increase in the number of students enrolled for the fall semester over the previous year. UNI's official fall 2010 enrollment is 13,201, a 0.9-percent increase over the 13,080 enrolled in fall 2009.

UNI has experienced a steady increase in enrollment since 2006, when the official fall count was 12,260 students.

More than 90 percent of UNI's enrollment is from the state of Iowa. UNI's retention rate for new freshmen entering the university in 2009 is 82.5 percent, an increase from the previous year.

Meantime, Kirkwood Community College set a new record in fall enrollment for the fourth consecutive year. 18,456 students enrolled at the official tenth-day measurement point, which is more than a 3.5 percent increase over last year's enrollment of 17,841.

Of the 18,456 students enrolled at Kirkwood, 10,673 in take classes at the main campus in Cedar Rapids, 3,497 in Iowa City and 3,469 are taking advantage of the Distance Learning courses. 538 students are working toward completing one of Kirkwood's five online degrees. That's up almost 300 percent from fall 2009.
