Culver attends Labor Day picnic in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Gov. Chet Culver was in Cedar Rapids on Monday to celebrate Labor Day with union workers from around the area.

Culver said as President Barack Obama spent the day focusing on a plan to spend billions on roads and railways, Iowa is also pushing forward with infrastructure initiatives. He said too many Iowans are still out of jobs, but the state is recovering faster than many others.

"We have the eighth strongest-growing economy in the country," Culver explained. "Our unemployment rate is fifty-percent lower than the national average; it's the ninth lowest in the nation."

Culver intends to keep focusing on transportation infrastructure here in Iowa. One of his main goals is to link Chicago and Eastern Iowa cities by passenger rail.
