Tyson production halted by USDA inspector

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Production in the slaughter area of the Tyson Meatpacking Plant was stopped Tuesday after a USDA inspector raised concerns about the way some hogs were being herded.  That's according to Tyson spokesperson Gary Mickelson.

The USDA says it was because of "humane handling issues."

An employee called KWWL during the afternoon to say production stopped at 8:00 a.m. after possible animal abuse.  Our camera crew stopped by the plant around 3:00 p.m. and found truckloads of hogs not being let into the facility.

Mickelson says the problems were resolved and full operations resumed Tuesday afternoon.  Mickelson adds that there will be no "A" shift Wednesday morning because of the loss of production.  This only affects the cut floor and the converting floor.
