Coach Berry remembered

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- It was at Columbus High School where Jim Berry got his start in coaching as well as teaching. It's a place he held very close to his heart.

When you walk the halls of Columbus high, it's hard not to notice the man behind the glass. Trophies, plaques, and photographs line the halls to honor his teams' accomplishments.

When it came to the game he loved he was far from shy and what he taught reverberated in his former players and coaches.

Aundra Meeks was a former student of Berry's and now the Activities Coordinator at Columbus High School. He had the privilege of coaching with Berry just a few years ago.

"Teach the fundamentals, teach the details, but be a teacher. So that's one thing I will always keep with me. This is a classroom and we are teachers," said Meeks.

When his basketball days were over at Columbus Berry could still be seen in the bleachers cheering on his team. He was still part of the school. This past spring he guided the tennis team to two championships, but it wasn't the trophies that motivated him.

"It's been remarkable to watch him over these years and see how to do it and how to do it the right way," said Meeks.

Coach Berry never really retired from Columbus high school and his former players say the only thing bigger than his drive to win was his heart.
