NEWTON (KWWL) -- In 1969, on the eve of his 46th birthday, former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano died in a plane crash.

Marciano was headed to Des Moines from Chicago.

The pilot, Glenn Belz and Frankie Farrell, both from Des Moines also died in the crash.

Marciano was headed to Des Moines to give a speech and attend a surprise birthday party when the plane experienced a problem and Belz tried to land in Newton, only to hit a tree two miles from the airport.

Marciano is still the only undefeated heavyweight champion in boxing history.
