Cyclones set for season opener Thursday

AMES (KWWL) -- The second year of the Paul Rhoads era is set to kick off in just 3 days.  The Cyclones hope to build upon the unexpected success  of year one, when the Cyclones finished 7-6 with an Insight Bowl Championship.

The quest to improve on that begins Thursday when Iowa State plays host to Northern Illinois, and the Cyclone players say they're feeling much more comfortable going into game one than they were a year ago.

"We're really excited going through training camp, and the last couple weeks we've gotten to this point," says linebacker Michael O'Connell, "It's been a long month, it's been a great month for this football team."

"You get so tense anticipating the first game," adds quarterback Austen Arnaud, "It's the first game of my last season at Iowa State, which is weird to say.  I'm very excited, and I'm trying to control those emotions until Thursday."

Thursday's kickoff is set for 7:00 PM at Jack Trice Stadium.
