Transformer blow out leads to evacuation of Waterloo East High

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A chain of events started by a blown transformer lead to the evacuation of Waterloo East High School Monday afternoon.

Sharon Miller, Executive Director of School and Community Relations, says that a transformer outside the building lost one leg of its power source at around 2:30 p.m., causing the building to lose power.  School was dismissed at 2:35 p.m. as normal.

Miller says that while that was happening, a motor in an HVAC unit below the culinary arts lab kept trying to run on reduced power and eventually burned up, filling the lab with smoke.

The nearly 125 students and staff left in the building for sports and after school activities were evacuated for a short time and no one was injured.

School is expected to run as normal on Tuesday.
