HUDSON (KWWL)-- A season-opening shootout Friday night in Hudson, as 2009 State Class A runner up Mason City Newman outscored the Hudson Pirates, 56-42.
Led by Senior running back, Ben Buffington, the Newman Knights scored twice early and took a 14-0 lead.
The Pirates, whom drop down this season from Class 2A to Class 1A, got on the board, thanks to a 27-yard touchdown run by Senior Tanner Wright.
The Pirates 6-2 Junior Quarterback, former KWWL-TV Athlete of the Week, Cale Henke, found Alex Chilcote for two first half touchdown passes. The Pirates came back from a 20-7 deficit to tie the game at 21 late in the second quarter, but Newman scored again right before half to lead 28-21.
The second half produced an identical offensive explosion, as Newman again outscored Hudson 28-21 and beat the Pirates, 56-42.
Next week, non-district tune ups for both teams, as Hudson travels to play at nearby rival Dike-New Hartford and Mason City Newman plays host to Class 1A St. Ansgar in a non-district clash in Mason City.
