Cedar Falls nurse wins mentor award

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)-- Sometimes its hard to find that passion or what you want to do for a very long time.

"I think sometimes it just happens and your just lucky I guess," said Mary Walton, L.P.N.

That is what Mary Walton has done.

Walton has been a nurse for more than 30 years 13 of those years with the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home.

"I get to come to work and do what I love to do. I'm a care taking personality and that's what I get to do," said Walton.

Walton has been awarded with the Outstanding Mentor Award for her services in the field of aging.

Her co-workers say they were not surprised when they heard she won the award.

"We are incredibly blessed to have her. She is not only smart and capable and an excellent nurse, but one of the most kindest people I personally know," said Briana Hilmer, Director of Nursing.

Known as mother Mary, because of her nurturing yet firm personality, she said she wouldn't be able to do her job without her fellow co-workers.

"It is nice to be recognized by your peers, of course it is, but almost everyone that works here deserves an award," said Walton.
