Local tattoo artists display skateboard art

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Two local tattoo artists are making their mark in more ways than one. While most locals know Juno Kerr and Pete Ferrel as tattoo artists at Eternal Ink Tattoos and Piercing, they might not realize that they have also taken their creativity to the streets in designing skateboard decks.

The Waterloo Center for the Arts is currently showcasing their creative, unique talents in a new exhibit entitled "Art on Wheels." The skate decks presented in this exhibition were designed by Juno and Pete, and like most skateboard graphic designers, they both have a history of skateboarding themselves. Between 2004 and 2005, they created custom art for a line of skate decks produced by Worship Skateboards, a company based in Norwich, Connecticut. These decks can be viewed or purchased online at www.worshipskateboards.com.

One of the most distinctive elements of skateboarding is its unique graphic aesthetics: images that shock, disturb or rebel against mainstream American culture are common. Skate graphics reflect the rebelliousness of skater culture and express the personalities of individual skaters. Skate art tends toward the raw and distressed – perhaps mirroring the fact that these graphics often become worn or abraded from the rigors of the sport. Images are often built through a layering process – mimicking or actually composed by the layering of decals, stenciling, and graffiti.

Meet the artists and learn more about the Art On Wheels exhibit at the Artist Reception on Sunday, September 19 from 3:00-4:30pm. The Friends of the Art Center will provide light refreshments during the reception. Art On Wheels will be on display through September 30, 2010 in the Longfellow Concourse of the Waterloo Center for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm, and Sunday 1:00-5:00pm. There is no charge to view this exhibit.
