Hospital reveals surprising cause of child injuries

OHIO (KWWL) -- Sure it's weird to think about snow in August, but a new study is out this morning that shows one of winter's most popular past-times is also one of the most dangerous.

The study from Nationwide Children's Hospital in Ohio finds more than 20,000 children are injured each year in sledding accidents.

The most common injuries were fractures, followed by cuts and bruises.

More than a third of injuries were to the head, and collisions were most likely to result in traumatic brain injuries.

Researchers say sledding areas should be clear of trees and discourage sledding in streets and highways to avoid collisions with cars and other traffic.
