Iowa unemployment rate edges up

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Iowa Workforce Development says the state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose in July.

July's unemployment rate was 6.8 percent which is up from June's revised unemployment rate of 6.7 percent.  Iowa's unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in July 2009.

The U.S. unemployment rate stands at 9.5 percent.

"In contrast to the U.S. employment situation, Iowa's private sector hired at a strong enough pace in July to overcome the job losses on the government side," said Elisabeth Buck, director of Iowa Workforce Development. "Nonfarm jobs in the state have increased in six of the first seven months of 2010, which has managed to keep the recovery intact."

113,800 Iowa residents were looking for work in July.

The number of working Iowans fell to 1,560,800 in July from 1,567,200 in June.
