And if you don't think you can cut sugar from your diet, think again.
"It's not that hard if you go with the nothing sweet, nothing white and stick to that. You are going to eliminate 90 percent of the foods that are basically high glycemic foods," said Dr. Michael Rothkopf with Baylor Medical Center.
Instead, look for foods which have a low glycemic index. Those foods include fruit, vegetables, foods high in protein, like fish, chicken, and lean meats. And pass on the bread, baked potatoes, and other starches.
