Cedar Rapids bat colony gets reprieve

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) -- A bat colony in Cedar Rapids is getting a break.

Young bats have been living in an abandoned flood-damaged house in northwest Cedar Rapids that was scheduled for demolition. But those plans have been put on hold until the bats are old enough to fly on their own.

Some small brown bats in the colony are too young to fly and would not survive any demolition work.

Indian Creek Nature Center Director Rich Patterson says it's best to wait, since the bats will soon be migrating.

But one local bat lover is concerned some bats might still be trapped in the demolition, and would like to see bat excluders installed over the entrances to the house. Those would allow the bats to leave the roost, but not return.
