City of Johnston discharging wastewater

JOHNSTON (KWWL) - The city of Johnston is discharging wastewater from a dislodged sewer pipe along Weybridge Court.

The city suspects storms knocked over a manhole structure, which dislodged the pipe. City employees discovered the discharge about 12:30 p.m. Thursday and estimate it is sending about 80 gallons of wastewater per minute to a drainage ditch. The ditch empties into Beaver Creek, which flows into the Des Moines River.

The city plans to reroute the discharge Thursday evening and is contracting with companies to haul away the untreated wastewater.

People and pets should avoid the area for 48 hours after the discharge ends, and to avoid contact with flood waters. Floodwater may have an elevated bacterial count.

According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, other communities across the state are also likely discharging wastewater as heavy storms have overwhelmed wastewater collection and treatment systems.
