Trial begins for man accused of killing girlfriend's daughter

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Opening statements began Thursday morning in the first degree murder trial of Lee Muldoon.

Muldoon is accused of killing his girlfriend's daughter, 2 year-old Skylar Inman.

Thursday morning, prosecutors told jurors Muldoon delivered the fatal blow. Lawyers also said Muldoon abused Skylar until she died. Prosecutors said she had 130 external bruises on her body.

Meantime, defense attorneys contend there was no evidence. They say the charges against Muldoon are a result of the girl's mother lying.

Skylar's mother, 20 year-old Brianna Volesky, was charged with child endangerment causing death, but pleaded guilty earlier this year to neglect and involuntary manslaughter. She is scheduled to be sentenced after Muldoon's trial.

Police found Skylar Inman not breathing in July 2008, in Coggon.

Prosecution called several medical professional to the stand to testify, all who attended to Skylar while she was alive.

The trial is expected to last three to four weeks.
