Total eclipse of 1869 viewable in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- A total eclipse of the sun happened August 7, 1869.  Iowa was in the center of its path from Montana down to North Carolina.

In some areas, it was so dark, the cows came home, as if it were already the evening.  It lasted three minutes, 11 seconds. Iowa City was an ideal place for viewing the phenomenon.

Researchers at the University took observations on that perfectly clear day.
