Common diabetic eye disease on the rise

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An eye disorder that's prevalent among diabetics is apparently on the rise.

Researchers with the Centers for Disease Control say nearly 30 percent of diabetics over 40 are estimated to have diabetic retinopathy, with four percent having severe cases that threaten their vision.

The condition is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among U.S. adults.

These numbers are expected to rise as the population ages and more people are diagnosed with diabetes.
