Benefit Saturday for Wellsburg woman fighting rare illness

WELLSBURG (KWWL) -- In May, Jean Kolthoff came down with symptoms similar to the flu. However as her symptoms intensified, she was taken to Allen Hospital with the expectation of getting some antibiotics and to be feeling better within a few days. Little did the family know that this was not a bout of the flu but a very serious illness that would put Jean in the ICU on a ventilator, fighting for her life.

Jean was diagnosed with Viral Encephalitis Herpes Simplex. This is a virus that affects the brain and even though it is rare it can be contracted by anyone. After several weeks in ICU Jean began to make slow improvements, but she had been left with stroke-like symptoms.

Area fire departments are hosting a free will donation Spaghetti Supper on Saturday at the Wellsburg Fire Station from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. An auction will start at 8:00 p.m. with numerous items on the auction block including Iowa, Iowa State and University of Northern Iowa autographed items.

All proceeds from the supper and auction will be donated to Rodney and Jean Kolthoff to help with Jean's medical expenses. If you are unable to attend and would like to make a donation they may be sent to:

The Kolthoff Family; c/o Wellsburg Fire Department; P.O. Box 142; Wellsburg, IA 50680

Rodney and Jean have lived in Wellsburg for 35 years and own a small business. Rodney is also the local fire chief.
