Secret of deep sleepers revealed

Massachusetts (KWWL) -- Ever wonder why some people can sleep through the loudest thunderstorms, while others wake up at the sound of a pin dropping?

New research from Massachusetts General Hospital aims to answer that question through brain wave patterns.

Using brain scans, researchers found heavy sleepers produce more bursts of brain activity when they're sleeping, and those bursts appear to help block loud noises during sleep.

Researchers hope their studies will someday lead to a drug or device that will help people with sleep disorders.
