Iowa City sweethearts marry in junior high school where they met

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Two Iowa City junior high sweethearts were married Monday, in the same school they met in 50 years ago.

Karen Wilcox and Mike Wilson tied the knot at Southeast Junior High on Monday morning. They met in 1962, brought together by an alphabetical seating arrangement. They danced to "Blue Velvet" by Bobby Vinton, on stage in front of friends and family.

They married in the same room where they first danced together.

"It feels like it was meant to happen," Wilcox said. "It feels like a real connection with the past."

"This was a place we spent a lot of time; this very room," Wilson said. "This is where we ate every day; this used to be called the 'cafetorium.'"

Mike and Karen began dating in the 8th grade, then broke up by high school. But, they're happy to have found their way back to one another, so many years later.
