Luxemburg church steeple destroyed by fire

LUXEMBURG (KWWL) -- Neighbors said just before 2:00 a.m., they heard a 'snap, snap, snap' and a loud 'bang'.

It was an early wake up call for Andy Bockenstedt.

"Woke up about 3:00 from a friend calling me and he said they church is on fire and we walked outside and just saw a big glowing flame," Bockenstedt said.

The fire that woke Bockenstedt, woke the whole town up as everyone came to their door steps to see what the commotion was all about.

"It was quite a sight," Bockenstedt said.

Sue Rausch was woken up by her husband, a volunteer fire fighter, as he ran out the door. Rausch's first thought was to call her daughter.

"I was just scared that they wouldn't be able to contain it. That our whole church would be gone. We're very lucky at this point. I guess my thoughts ran to my daughter as she is getting married May 14. I thought, are we going to have a church," Rausch said.

Fire officials say damage was mainly done to the steeple of the church. They suspect lightning was the cause, but are still investigating.

Rausch says people all over town came out to help clean up and after finding out the inside of the church was not damaged she is relieved.

"Oh there will be a wedding, May 14, there will be a wedding that's for sure," Rausch said.

A cross at the top of the steeple fell and took down some nearby power lines. Alliant Energy was on the scene, trying to restore power in the area.
