ISU Assistant Elliott discusses Cy-Hawk Rivalry

AMES (KWWL) -- Iowa State assistant coach Bobby Elliott is entering his third stint on the sidelines in Ames.

"When this opportunity popped up and Paul called, we jumped all over it," said Elliott, "We're just happy to be home."

Prior to his time in Ames, Elliott worked under Hayden Fry in Kinnick Stadium, while he's also the son of former Iowa A.D. Bump Elliot.  From both perspectives, he believes dropping the Cy-Hawk after conference re-alignment, would be a big mistake.

"I'd hate that, I'd hate that to happen.  I think everyone sees it as a positive thing.  I think the people at Iowa and Iowa State see this as a great weekend and a fun rivalry."

That rivalry has definitely picked up in the past 12 years.  Iowa had dominated the game winning 15 straight from 1982 to 1997.  The Cyclones finally broke that string in 1998 with a victory that started a 5 game run for the Cyclones.  Over the past decade the series has been even at 5 apiece.

"There are people who say we should play at the end of the year.   We did in 2001.  The intensity was magnificent."

Elliott says he expects the rivalry to stay that way as he does believe it will saved in the end.

"I think there's other ways to work it out, other than sacrificing this game."
