Education is key difference in governor's race

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The race for governor of Iowa may be won and lost on education.

Both Democratic Governor Chet Culver and Republican Terry Branstad say education will be a priority, but they favor different approaches.

Culver talks about his success in making state-paid preschool available to most 4-year olds.

Branstad, however would like to end state support of preschool.

Instead, he favors private preschools operated by churches and other nonprofits.

He says he would consider helping families who can't afford preschool.

Both candidates say they favor increasing teacher pay, but Culver supports across-the-board increases while Branstad has favored targeted raises.
