UPDATE: 2 dead after crash near Fairbank ethanol plant

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Two people have died after a car crash in Buchanan County. It happened near the Hawkeyes Renewable Ethanol Plant near Fairbank about 5:30 a.m. on Friday.

The State Patrol says the driver, 23 year-old Corey Annis, lost control, and the car rolled several times, eventually rolling over a chain link fence that was protecting some exposed pipes.

Annis was taken to Covenant Hospital in Waterloo with injuries. He died from those injuries on Saturday. The passenger, 49 year-old Brad Higgins, was killed in the accident. The Iowa State Patrol report says Higgins was not wearing his seatbelt.

The crash forced employees of the Hawkeye Renewable Ethanol Plant to leave the building after a gas main at the plant was hit. Authorities also blocked off portions of Highway 281.

Emergency officials tell us a car crashed into a natural gas transfer station very close to the plant, severely damaging a gas main.

To help repair the damage to the natural gas line, the gas company is bleeding off the gas near the Lakeview Golf Course in Oelwein.

People near there may be able to notice a smell of natural gas but officials say the situation is under control.
