Iowa borders set four months before becoming 31st state in 1846

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Douglas Bill was passed August 4, 1846 setting the borders of what would eventually become Iowa.

The vote came in the Territorial Constitutional Convention after much speculation that Iowa was set to take too much space. The bill proposed nearly the same boundaries as were proposed in the Territorial Constitutional Convention of 1844.

Iowa became the 31st state on December 28, 1846.
