Iowa Lottery set for 25th birthday

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Remember the Wheel Spin TV show from 1985?

That was the first year for the Iowa Lottery, but this month, the lottery turns 25.

It later grew to include scratch games. And in 1992, the multi-state Powerball game began along with pull-tabs.

The Iowa Lottery is still headquartered in Urbandale.

In 2006, Tim and Kellie Guderian of Fort Dodge won the largest jackpot ever awarded in Iowa, $200 million.

"We're now using the same business model that we used with scratch tickets, where we're having one dollar games," said Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich. "And in the future you're going to see some $2, $5 games, $10 games -- who knows, we may have a billion dollar jackpot at some point."
