WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Swollen feet, a sore back and anxiety are all typical symptoms of pregnancy.
Could yoga be the solution?
Some say it's the key for pregnant women to stay fit and feel good.
"I was like yoga? I don't know if that's for me. But when I came the strengthening and energy I had when I left I definitely knew I was coming back," yoga fan Cyndrea Craig-Lawrence said.
Craig-Lawrence is finding yoga for the first time. Christine Buchbinder De Calcagno relied on prenatal yoga for her first pregnancy and now she's back a second time.
"I love it. I swear by it," she said.
Prenatal yoga is said to have various health benefits for expectant mommies including easing back pain, reducing swelling, helping with digestion, even soothing anxious feelings.
"It's widely known that yoga is safe and effective for the physical body, the emotional body, and perhaps even the spiritual," yoga instructor Margaret Kirschner said.
Kirschner has been teaching yoga classes for years, but says it's becoming increasingly popular.
"Think how your babies must feel. So supported," she said.
In addition to helping make pregnancy more comfortable, these exercises also prepare women for delivery.
"It really helped me to go through the emotions and have a very easy and quick delivery which was tremendous," De CalCagno said.
"Nowadays we know being upright and mobile is ideal for women who would like to have a natural birth, so what we do in a yoga class is helping women prepare for that very event," Kirschner said.
And that's a relief to Craig-Lawrence, who is anxiously awaiting the arrival of her first baby.
"I'm ready. I'm ready," she said.
A new yoga studio recently opened in the Cedar Valley.
It's called "Field of Yoga" just off Main Street in Cedar Falls.
The studio will offer a pre-natal yoga class starting in September.
You can also find yoga studios in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Dubuque.
