ISU, Ames officials hope to expand new transit hub

AMES (KWWL) -- Iowa State and Ames transit officials are asking the FTA for more than $10 million to build the next phase of a new transit hub.

Officials say they hope the project will help the redevelopment of the Campustown area.

The second phase of the project will expand on a facility scheduled to open in June 2012 and is expected to cost $13 million.

The project would include two hybrid buses, a parking garage and improvements to streets and traffic signs.

Officials say the project could create 300 construction jobs and 200 other jobs while being built and could create 500 long-term jobs once the project is finished.

Possible future projects in Campustown could include a hotel, convenience store, grocery store and movie theater.
