Charles City hosts soldier send-off

CHARLES CITY (KWWL) -- A send-off ceremony is planned for the 2nd brigade combat team, 34th infantry division tonight in Charles City.  The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. at the Iowa National Guard Armory, 2003 Clark Street in Charles City.

Following the ceremony, the soldiers will report to their mobilization station at Camp Shelby, Miss.  for additional training and preparation before departing for Afghanistan.  The 2BCT has been ordered to federal active duty under a partial mobilization call-up that authorizes President Obama to order members of the National Guard and reserves to active duty for one year.

The mission of the 2BCT is to provide full-spectrum operations in combat theater, including lethal and non-lethal capabilities, support to Afghan National Army and police units, and assistance to humanitarian relief initiatives.
