Filing period underway for county office candidates

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The filing period for people seeking to run as a third party candidate for a county office started Monday.  In order to appear on the General Election ballot, candidates must file their nomination papers with their local county auditor's office by 5:00 p.m. on August 25.

Candidates who won their respective contests in the June 8 Primary Election are automatically placed on the General Election ballot and do not need to file again.

Political parties that did not nominate a candidate for a particular office at the Primary Election may nominate a candidate for the General Election by convention. Candidates nominated by political party convention must file an affidavit of candidacy and the certificate of nomination by the political party before the filing deadline for the particular office they are seeking.

Required nomination papers, a list of offices that will appear on the ballot, and detailed candidates guides are available on the Secretary of State's website. This page can be accessed directly at or by visiting and clicking on the "Information for Candidates" link at the top of the page.

Candidates may also contact their local county auditor's office to request required candidate materials and information. To locate your county auditor, visit and click on "Find Your County Auditor."
