Scrap metal drive raises funds for POW/MIA monument

WATERLOO (KWWL) Local Rolling Thunder Chapter #1 and A-Line Iron and Metals teamed up for a scrap metal drive. The money collected from the old appliances will be used to purchase a POW/MIA monument.

"We actually started this project in 2005. This year we'd like to implement the monument and finish it," said Rolling Thunder Chapter #1 President Tom "Robby" Robinson.

The monument will be placed at Soldiers and Sailors Park at Veterans Memorial Hall in Waterloo.

"That site has always been lacking a special way to pay tribute to our POWs and MIAs, which is our prisoners of war and missing in action," said Robinson.

The entire cost of the project is about $15,000. So far, Rolling Thunder has raised about half the cost.

"We would like to have a tribute we do not have. We would like this to be a lasting memento so generations from now they'll know and hopefully carry on the traditions," said Robinson.

Rolling Thunder and A-Line try to schedule at least two scrap metal drives a month. Dates for August haven't been set yet, but they'll keep going until they've raised enough money for the new monument.

The goal is to have the monument in place by Veterans Day, November 11th.
