Study shows mammograms less effective for women in 40's

Posted:

(KWWL) -- A new study suggests mammograms are less effective in women in their 40's, Mostly because tumors are harder to detect at this age.

Researchers at Stanford University wanted to see why mammogram screening outcomes are poorer for younger women.

Using a computer simulated model, they created scenarios to estimate tumor size and growth rate for women in their 40's, 50's and 60's.

They found dense tissue, which makes tumors hard to detect, was responsible for 79 percent of poor mammography outcomes.
