Independence comes up short in upset bid

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- An opportunistic Independence offense looked poised to seize the moment.

It took one big inning for the Knoxville Panthers to make sure the moment was theirs.

Top-seeded Knoxville knocked off the number eight seed Independence Tuesday 5-3 in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state tournament.

The Mustangs scored to unearned runs in the second inning, followed by a Sam Rasmussen RBI single in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

The Panther bats would wake up in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together four hits that plated four runs.

For Independence, it was the end to a good season, that saw the team make its first state tournament berth since 1996.

The Mustangs finish the year at 14-24.
