Columbus baseball team preps for state

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- It took 4 wins over the course of 12 days to put Waterloo Columbus in the state tournament, but as the team took off for Des Moines on Sunday night, they had their sights set on winning 3 more.

"We're playing really good baseball," said senior Nick Maas, "If we have our pitching, have our bats, and our defense, hopefully we'll come out on top."

Winning one game would already top the 2008 squad, the only other Sailor team in school history to reach state.  Many of the members of that team will be making their second trip to Des Moines, and they say the expectations are higher.

"Two years ago we were just happy to be there," said Maas, "and now this year we're looking to play 3 games, so we'll see how it goes."

"This year we're happy to go again," agreed head coach Terry Goerdt, "but we think we have a good enough team that maybe we can do some damage down there this time."

That's for good reason with 7 batters hitting over .300, while Maas and sophomore Craig Konrady and are both swinging over .400.

Defensively the pace has picked up with the Sailor giving up a total of 8 runs in their past 5 games.  All of that's led to Monday's opening round game.

"I've been thinking about it all week," said Maas, "It's kind of been hard to sleep just thinking about playing down in Des Moines, but we've got to take care of business.  So you've got to calm the nerves and be ready to play."
