Iowans hope tours, sales will boost distilleries

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- When the Mississippi River Distilling Company opens this winter in LeClaire, a gleaming 1,000-liter handcrafted German-made still will be the center of attention.

That's because the owners of the company are proud of the 18-foot-tall pressure cooker that will produce their unique blends of vodka, whiskey and gin.

It's also proof that a new state law allowing visitors to buy liquor directly from distilleries is encouraging the businesses to attract people as interested in a tour as in a bottle of whiskey.

The law took effect July 1 as part of an effort to make Iowa's distilleries more of a tourist attraction.

The Mississippi River Distilling Company will be Iowa's third craft distillery, following Templeton Rye in Templeton and Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery in Cedar Rapids.
