Retirements save money, fewer looking for problems

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- More than 2000 state workers have decided to retire because of early retirement incentives.

The retirements are expected to save about $85 million, but an analysis by the Des Moines Register says it will leave less experienced workers left to check for fraud and abuse.

A total of 2,067 state employees took early retirement which is about 10 percent of executive branch employees. People will be hired to fill about half of those positions.

After retirements, 15 inspectors will be left  to check about 8,400 restaurants, grocery stores and food processing plants.
