Wapsipinicon River in Independence nears record flooding

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- People in Independence came to see just how high the Wapsipinicon River was Saturday.

"There's a lot more people coming every minute and see how fast it is rising," said Haley Schumann.

Schumann and lots of other people came to take pictures of the river in Independence.

"I guess it's unbelievable. It's amazing how fast it can go up," said Schumann.

Schumann has lived here four years. She and other people have never seen the river this high before.

"I wanted to come down and see this because I don't know if it will ever happen again, which I hope not, but I just want to remember this day of it happening," said Schumann.

Cato Hoaglan has seen it this bad a few times. He was born in Independence in 1934 and has lived in the town ever since.

"I really feel bad for the people that live along this river. They have to put up with a lot," said Hoaglan.

Due to high waters, Highway 150 in Independence is closed, as well as numerous residential streets.

The Independence Police Department said the roads will remain closed until the water goes down.
