DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Flash flooding beginning overnight and continuing into Friday morning has closed roads in Dubuque, Durango, Sherrill, and Sageville.

Thursday night, just after 9 p.m., cars were stranded at the intersection of Central and 22nd Street where the road turned into river as water flowed down the street.

Neighbor Nick Henkel says he's lived in the area for four years and says he has only seen that type of flash flooding once before.

Early Friday morning, the Dubuque County Emergency Management Agency reported Highway 52 North is closed between the NW Arterial in Sageville to South Mound Road in Rickardsville.

Fire departments report up to 8" of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours in northwest Dubuque County.

Drivers are advised to turnaround if they see a roadway covered in water.
