Department of Ag computer stolen containing personal data

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Agriculture says a computer was stolen containing the personal information of more than 3,000 Iowans.

The department says the computer was stolen from a locked state vehicle parked in a parking ramp in Des Moines. The computer was encryption protected, but there is still a concern that someone could gain unauthorized access to the names, addresses, phone numbers and social security numbers of 3,404 Iowans.

The affected people were part of the Iowa Horse and Dog Breeding Program. The program gives money to breeders of successful Iowa born racing greyhounds and racehorses.

The department is encouraging anyone potentially affected by the security breach to place a fraud victim alert on their credit report by contacting the three credit reporting companies. The department says a letter will also be mailed to anyone potentially affected.
