Fire at Independence mobile home; kitten rescued

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -- Independence firefighters rescued a kitten Thursday morning while fighting a fire at a mobile home.

Crews were called to the Rush Park Mobile Home Park off of 19th Avenue NW just before 9:00 Thursday morning after a neighbor noticed smoke coming from the eaves of unit 33 and called 911.

Firefighters found the fire in the bathroom.  They say that because the neighbor noticed the smoke so quickly, firefighters were able to keep the fire damage to a minimum.  They say there is a fair amount of smoke damage however.

Firefighters say no one was home at the time, the owner was in northern Iowa hauling grain.

They did find a kitten inside the home and were able to rescue it with the help of Dr. Douglas Peterschmidt, a veterinarian who is a member of the Independence Fire Department.
